Yves Saint Laurent, one of the most successful fashion designers of the 20th century, died last night at the age of 71.

The Paris-based couturier had suffered a long illness and a lifetime of depression.

A longtime friend and associate of Saint Laurent said he died at his Paris home yesterday evening.

The innovative designer has been an institution for decades in the world of high fashion and was credited with making high fashion more accessible to the person on the high street.

A reclusive and private individual, he was widely considered the last of a generation that included Christian Dior and Coco Chanel and made Paris the fashion capital of the world.

He was the first to use black women on the catwalk and won countless awards for his creations.

Using his own label, YSL, he popularised fashion trends throughout the sixties and seventies, such as the tuxedo suit for women in 1966 called 'le smoking suit'.

Saint Laurent was born in Oran, Algeria, in 1936 but left for Paris aged 17 in 1953.

A year later in 1954, he enrolled at the Chambre Syndicale school of haute couture, but student life lasted only three months. He was introduced to Christian Dior, then regarded as the greatest creator of his day, and Dior was so impressed with Saint Laurent's talent that he hired him on the spot.

When Dior died suddenly in 1957, Saint Laurent was named head of the House of Dior at the age of 21.

The next year, his first solo collection for Dior - the "trapeze" line - launched Saint Laurent's stardom. The trapeze dress - with its narrow shoulders and wide, swinging skirt - was a hit, and a breath of fresh air after years of constructed clothing, tight waists and girdles.

In 1962 he left to open his own couture house and never looked back. The world was changing and there was a new appetite for originality, particularly with women, who suddenly had more economic freedom.

Bouts of depression marked his career. Pierre Berge, the designer's longtime business partner and former romantic partner, was quoted as saying that Saint Laurent was born with a nervous breakdown.

The pair later started a chain of Rive Gauche ready-to-wear boutiques.

Life Magazine hailed his first line under his own label as "the best collection of suits since Chanel."

Using ethnic themes, he often mixed bright colours with black. He was also famous for his see-through blouses, bolero jackets and smocks.

Experts held him in esteem as the last true couturier, maintaining the highest standards of classic cut and tailoring.

He was also widely considered the last of a generation who made Paris the fashion capital of the world, with the Rive Gauche, or Left Bank, as its elegant headquarters.

But the designer was not without controversy. In the mid 1970s, he launched a perfume called Opium which brought accusations that he condoned drug use.

For much of his life he also fought depression and in later years he admitted to using to 'those false friends which are tranquillisers and narcotics'.

When the designer announced his retirement in 2002, it was mourned in the fashion world as the end of an era. He said he had become disillusioned with the industry's focus on commercialism.

'I have nothing in common with this new world of fashion, which has been reduced to mere window-dressing. Elegance and beauty have been banished,' he said.

His fashion house continued and earlier this week, YSL unveiled Naomi Campbell as the new face of the French fashion house despite her recent run-ins with the law. She will replace her friend Kate Moss in the role, for a reported £200,000.

Saint Laurent launched Miss Campbell's career, doing her first campaign for them in the 1990s.

He has been in poor health for the last few months of his life and is thought to have been suffering from respiratory illness.
